The gold rush was triggered by the discovery of gold in the Sacramento Valley at Sutter’s Mill in January of 1848. Once word broke out people from all over the world began rushing into California to try and get rich. In the two years to follow over 90,000 people migrated there from all over. Places like Mexico, Chile, Australia, and many regions of Europe. By 1852 the population had risen to more than 250,000 from a ghost state to one of the most populated. Of those people over 100,000 were non natives to California. Many of the immigrants were Chinese workers who were poor and needed to start a new life. In the time of the gold rush over $2 billion worth of gold was extracted from the ground.
Some famous people who were involved included Mark Twain and Levi Strauss. Mark Twain had not yet started his many famous books and was still looking to find wealth and finding something to do with his life. Fortunately he never did find his wealth from gold so he started writing. Levi Strauss invented blue jeans for miners who were searching for gold, these jeans would help stop them from tearing and cutting their knees and are the jeans that we all wear today hence the levi’s brand.
