Manifest Destiny
Manifest Destiny was originally proposed in 1845 in a summer issue of the United States Magazine. It was an idea that was easily accepted by the American public. In vernacular terms, it was the duty expressed to burden all American people - the duty of westward expansion. The American people took up the cause with gusto, forming parties and leaving homes, jobs, and friends behind. The West Coast sent enticements, promising gold and great fortune to those who got their first. There was an abundance of riches, they claimed, and this was enough to draw even the skeptics toiling across the mountains and plains of the new world.
With this migration, and the great American Gold Rush, several prominent trails sprung up, blazed by careworn settlers as they moved towards the west. These trails included the Oregon Trail, the Mormon Trail, and the Sante Fe Trail. All three of these played an active role in Manifest Destiny, providing pioneers with at least a hint of a direction as to which way to set their course. This journey was no easy feat, nonetheless. These trails were scenes of death and sadness, and they took lives, as well as the heart of many charismatic travelers.
The following are links that provide further information of the aforementioned trails that were utilized by the pioneers in Manifest Destiny:
